HCM Music College has been involved in music for over 30 years.
Synergy Music Limited (the parent company of HCM) started trading in 1986 as Make Music – a retail business selling musical instruments. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the company went from strength to strength, adding a successful musical instrument mail order business called Action Express to its portfolio, alongside its retail outlets. The company continued to grow until it eventually had large retail facilities around the UK, including in North and West London, Devon, Kent, Essex (Bluewater Shopping Centre) and Birmingham (Merryhill Shopping Centre).
Synergy Music Limited also ran Yamaha Home World – a major shopping destination for Yamaha digital pianos and keyboards in the South East. Working in partnership with Yamaha, Synergy Music Limited began exhibiting at major consumer shows, such as the Ideal Home Show and Grand Designs Live, as well as hotel exhibitions and shopping centres.
To complement the retail business, Synergy Music Limited started to offer musical instrument lessons, eventually becoming an official Yamaha Music School and Technics Music Academy (location dependent).
In 2005, Make Music changed its name to Playsomething, as the focus of the activities changed to music education. Playsomething eventually had a number of music academies around Hertfordshire providing ‘after school’ musical instrument lessons and an ‘in-school’ travelling music service which provided music lessons in primary and secondary schools throughout Hertfordshire.
In 2009, Playsomething rebranded as the Hertfordshire College of Music (HCM) and began partnering with further education colleges (including Hertford Regional College, North Hertfordshire College and Milton Keynes College) to provide music diplomas to 16 to 19 year olds.
Today HCM operates as a music college with three sites across Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, in Ware, Letchworth and Milton Keynes, offering a selection of music courses and lessons to suit budding musicians of all ages and abilities, in conjunction with our validating partners: Milton Keynes College and RSL (Rockschool).
For those aged 16+, we run full-time music diploma courses with Milton Keynes College, including RSL (Rockschool) Level 2 and Level 3 Music Performance Diplomas and Level 2 and Level 3 Music Production Diplomas. All our diploma courses are designed for students interested in making music their career, so we offer a broad range of training, including instrument technique, theory, performance skills, an overview of the music business and networking with the music industry.
Our Music Performance Diplomas are designed for aspiring guitarists, singers, bassists, keyboard players, drummers and songwriters, while our Music Production Diplomas encourage you to try your hand as a producer, MC, DJ, beatboxer, rapper, urban songwriter or remixer.
Our music diploma courses are free for UK and EU students aged 18 or under* and offer an innovative alternative to the traditional sixth form route for students with a keen interest in music. There are also funding options available for those aged 19+.
For children aged 7+, and adults of all ages and abilities too, we offer group and one-to-one music lessons across a range of instruments including electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, piano & keyboard, vocals and music theory. For those keen to learn some new creative skills, we also offer lessons in music technology, as well as band tuition and Little Musicians classes for children aged 4 to 6.
Whether you choose to take musical instrument lessons with us, or study a Music Performance or Music Production Diploma, you’ll be taught by talented and inspirational teachers who all play an active role as music professionals in today’s music business. Our team members are qualified, enthusiastic and dedicated, and all fully DBS checked, with first aid and safeguarding training too.
All our academies offer free WiFi and have been designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment so you’ll feel comfortable during your time with us. Our professional facilities include rehearsal rooms, performance areas, lecture theatres and iMac suites, all containing industry-standard equipment and software from top music brands such as Marshall, Yamaha, Roland, Orange, Mapex, Roland, Shure, Apple, Logic and Ableton.
The road HCM Music School has travelled from since launch has been an incredibly rewarding one and we can’t wait for the next stage of our growth and evolution. We’d love to welcome you to HCM in the near future and have you join us on our hugely exciting journey.
