At HCM Ware, Letchworth & Milton Keynes Music College, we have a Drums course to suit all levels of learning. Whether you’re aged 16-19, or are 19+, there’s a globally recognised Music Diploma to suit you.

Level 2 Diploma

Our one-year intermediary Music Performance Diploma allows you to retake your English and/or Maths GCSEs or Functional Skills at the same time as studying music.

Level 3 Diploma

Our two-year advanced Music Performance Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels, making it a modern alternative to the traditional sixth form route.

Free for UK and EU students aged 18 or under.*

Funding options are available for students aged 19+.

Overview

If you’re an enthusiastic drummer who dreams of making a career out of your passion, then a diploma at HCM Milton Keynes, HCM Letchworth or HCM Ware can help you achieve your goals.

A one-year Level 2 Music Performance Diploma in Drums will help you improve your drumming technique, music theory and performance skills, and allows those who didn’t do as well as they hoped in their GCSEs to retake English and/or math GCSEs or Functional Skills while studying music.

A two-year Level 3 Music Performance Diploma is an exciting alternative to the conventional sixth form route, as it’s the equivalent to three A-levels. It will help you develop into a well-rounded drummer and performer with a solid understanding of the way the modern music industry works.

HCM Drums course is are free for UK and EU students aged 18 or under* and there are also funding options available for those aged 19+.

During your time studying drums at HCM, you’ll learn everything you need to be a confident drummer, including:

  • Kit choice, set-up and tuning
  • Speed, stamina and strength training
  • Health and safety implications of playing the drums
  • How to read drum notation
  • Sight reading and chart reading
  • Music theory and stylistic awareness
  • Warm up exercises
  • Creative expression on the drum kit, including rudiments, soloing and groove construction
  • Advanced ‘groove’ techniques, such as linear, double bass drum techniques, gospel, latin grooves and fills
  • Playing to ‘click’ and backing tracks
  • The use of drumming technology, including Logic, midi, triggering and looping.

Assessment Info

To study drums at HCM Music College, you don’t need to have achieved a certain grade on the drums, had formal music lessons, learned music theory or studied music at GCSE level. You just need to love music and have a sufficient level of technical ability as a drummer.

You won’t need to attend an audition to apply for either the Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma course in Drums, but we’ll invite you to an initial assessment session. It will be carried out by one of our dedicated diploma drum tutors and will assess your current skill level on the drums. This will also help us set goals for you and design a detailed plan to map your continuing progress during your time with us.

Requirements

Level 2

Music Performance Diploma – Drums: If your GCSE grades in maths and/or English are a grade D(3) or below, you’ll be required to retake GCSE or Functional Skills maths and/or English at the same time as you study your Level 2 music qualification.

Music Performance Diploma – Drums: Open to those with both GCSE maths and English at a grade C(4) or above, or a relevant full Level 2 qualification at Merit level or above, with an 100% attendance record in both maths and English.

Fees & Funding

  • HCM Drums course is fully-funded via the UK government for UK and EU students aged 16 to 18 years old.
  • For students aged 19-23, a drums course may be fully funded depending upon previous qualifications gained. Please ask for details.
  • For fee-paying students up to 23 years of age, the cost of the diploma course is £4,850.00 per year 
  • Funding and course costs for International Students are dealt with on an individual basis.

Enrolment age is based on the student’s age as of 31 August of the year they wish to enrol
