Overview

Whether you’re relatively new to the piano or have been playing keyboards for a while now, a Music Performance Diploma from HCM Ware, HCM Milton Keynes or HCM Letchworth can help you improve your playing technique and put you on the path to a career in music.

Taking a one-year Level 2 Keyboards and piano course will see you fall in love with music all over again. You’ll explore your instrument from new angles, will develop as a pianist and performer, and expand your music theory skills too. For those disappointed with their GCSEs results, it’s also a positive opportunity to retake English and/or maths GCSEs or Functional Skills while studying piano at the same time.

Studying a two-year Level 3 Keyboards and piano course is the same as taking three A-levels and is a unique approach to sixth form education, particularly for those with a passion for and interest in music. During your time with us, you’ll become a confident piano player and performer, with not only a good understanding of the way music works, but with realistic knowledge and practical experience of the music business too.

Studying a music performance Keyboards and piano course is free for UK and EU students aged 18 or under*, and funding options are available for those aged 19+ too.

When you study keyboards or the piano at HCM, you’ll cover a range of different areas to help you become a better pianist, such as:

  • Improvisational skills
  • Chord theory in the context of live performance
  • Notation and band chart reading
  • Sight reading and session skills
  • Experience of working with other rhythm section players
  • Music theory and knowledge
  • Songs from genres including pop, rock, soul, funk and jazz, chosen to help you process the keyboard techniques you’re studying and put them into context

Assessment Info

As long as you have a passion for the piano and can play to a reasonable standard, you’re welcome to apply to study at HCM Music College. You don’t need to be at a certain piano grade or have previously had piano or keyboard lessons, and you don’t need to have formally studied music theory or have taken music at GCSE level.

When you apply for either a Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma keyboard and piano course, you’ll be invited to attend an assessment at HCM, carried out by a diploma piano tutor. They’ll evaluate your level as a pianist or keyboard player and, if you choose to study with us, this will help with your long-term plans and goal setting during your time at HCM.
