At HCM Ware, Letchworth & Milton Keynes Music College, we have a Guitar course to suit all levels of learning. Whether you’re aged 16-19, or are 19+, there’s a globally recognised Music Diploma to suit you.

Level 2 Diploma

Our one-year intermediary Music Performance Diploma allows you to retake your English and/or Maths GCSEs or Functional Skills at the same time as studying music.

Level 3 Diploma

Our two-year advanced Music Performance Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels, making it a modern alternative to the traditional sixth form route.

Free for UK and EU students aged 18 or under.*

Funding options are available for students aged 19+.

Our one-year Level 2 Music Performance Diploma in Guitar course will help you advance your guitar technique, performance skills and music theory knowledge, as well as allowing those who didn’t perform as well as they’d hoped in their GCSEs to retake English and/or math GCSEs or Functional Skills while studying music.

Our two-year Level 3 Music Performance Diploma in Guitar is the equivalent to three A-levels and is a great alternative to the usual sixth form route. You’ll develop into a well-rounded guitarist and performer with a strong awareness of how the modern music industry works.

Music diploma courses for UK and EU students aged 18 or under* are free, and there are also funding options available for those aged 19+.

When you study guitar at HCM, you’ll cover a host of techniques to make you a versatile guitarist, including:

  • Riffs
  • Chord charts
  • Sight reading
  • Embedded instrument maintenance, such as string changing and intonation
  • Chords (from power to extended)
  • Arpeggios
  • CAGED system
  • Scales including pentatonic, blues and major, and their application
  • Chord progressions
  • Embedded music theory and knowledge
  • Solos
  • RH rhythm techniques up to 16th note subdivisions using down and up strokes
  • Improvisation
  • Advanced techniques such as bending, vibrato, legato, sweep picking, tapping
  • Picking including hybrid, alternate, economy and fingerpicking
  • Songs from genres including blues, rock, pop and funk, specifically chosen to help you explore the guitar techniques you’re learning about and put them into context

Assessment Info

To study guitar at HCM msuc school, you don’t need to have had formal music lessons, studied music at GCSE level, learned music theory or even attained a certain grade on the guitar. You just need to have reached a reasonable technical standard as a guitarist and really love music.

There are no auditions for HCM music diploma courses. When you apply for either the Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma Guitar course, you’ll be invited to attend an initial assessment session, carried out by one of our diploma guitar tutors. Your current skill level on the guitar will be assessed, which will help us to design a detailed plan and set goals for you so we can view your progress over your time with us.

Entry Requirements

Level 2

Music Performance Diploma – Guitar: If your GCSE grades in maths and/or English are a grade D(3) or below, you’ll be required to retake GCSE or Functional Skills maths and/or English at the same time as you study your Level 2 music qualification.

Music Performance Diploma – Guitar: Open to those with both GCSE maths and English at a grade C(4) or above, or a relevant full Level 2 qualification at Merit level or above, with an 100% attendance record in both maths and English.

Fees & Funding

  • Our diploma courses are fully funded via the UK government for UK and EU students aged 16 to 18 years old.
  • For students aged 19-23, a diploma course may be fully funded depending on previous qualifications gained. Please ask for details.
  • For fee-paying students up to 23 years of age, the cost of a diploma course is £4,850.00 per year.
  • Funding and course costs for International Students are dealt with on an individual basis.
  • For bursary information, including help towards travel costs to college and financial support awarded on the basis of need, please contact our education partner Milton Keynes College’s Student Services.

Enrolment age is based on the student’s age as of 31 August of the year they wish to enrol.
